Many laboratories create esthetic restorations, but some owners and their teams are lucky enough to work in facilities that are as beautiful as the work they create. In this ongoing LMT series, we showcase a technician’s modern paradise.
When the neighboring business to Nellmar Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, moved out in 2007, Owner Sara Kazan, CDT, jumped at the opportunity to expand. She leased the vacated space and tore down all of the walls, including those that separated Nellmar’s existing departments into multiple rooms. Left with 2,222 square feet of open space, Kazan designed a new laboratory from the ground up with the assistance of an architect and input from her employees. The result? A technician’s modern paradise.
The eight-month renovation experience was challenging, but the staff continued working throughout the construction. “They weathered the whole storm,” says Kazan. “I was so moved by that. It added more work to their average day, constantly moving benches around and cleaning things. But the end result was worth it.”
These days they enjoy cooking lunch and socializing in Nellmar’s full kitchen (pictured above), another added bonus of the redesign. “Our employees hold themselves to a high standard,” says Kazan. “Part of that comes from the fine work they do, but they’re also really proud of where they work.”
