Open system providers Datron Dynamics, exocad, Imetric and Sescoi have formed a partnership to provide a comprehensive, turnkey CAD/CAM solution, including the Imetric scanner line, exocad design software, WorkNC® CAM software and the Datron D5 milling machine. The solution can be used for all C&B restorations but, because of its precision, is especially touted for fabricating custom abutments and implant bars.
"Our partnership offers the best of both worlds. It provides the reliability and security of a closed system with the integration and flexibility of an open system," said Neal Demazure, Account Manager, Datron Dynamics, addressing attendees at the partners' first Dental CAD/CAM Technology Course on October 19 at Datron Dynamics' headquarters in Milford, NH.
During the day-long seminar, representatives from each company explained their product while Datron's Jordan Greenberg, Dental CAD/CAM Specialist, offered a hands-on demonstration, giving attendees the opportunity to watch the fabrication process of an implant bar from initial scan to final mill. "Each element of the complete system comes from companies that are industry leaders in their respective fields—whether it's high-speed milling machines, CAD or CAM software packages, or scanning and measurement devices. We've integrated our many years of experience and have worked together to create a well-proven, fully integrated workflow process," said Greenberg. Here's an overview of the equipment and software, all of which can be purchased through Datron Dynamics:
The Imetric D104 line of scanners includes three different models: the IScan D104 for C&B restorations; IScan D104a for C&B and custom abutments; and the IScan D104i which offers all the indications of the D104a plus direct screw-retained multi-implant structures. The D104 and D104a are fully upgradable to possess the features of the D104i. The Imetric white-light scanners provide an accuracy of eight microns or less (ideal for implant prosthetics) and feature two-camera technology with photogrammetry that enhances data quality and improves the accuracy of calibration and scanning. The new Imetric Version 5 scanning software is more user-friendly and streamlined, and is just being introduced to the marketplace.
exocad DentalCAD is an easy-to-use, dental-specific CAD software that features a TruSmile® function that offers a real-time rendering of restorations, virtual articulation and a DICOM viewer for integration with CT scan data. It can be used to design a variety of indications including crowns, bridges, custom abutments and bars, bite splints, copings, inlays, onlays, veneers, waxups and primary telescopes.
WorkNC DENTAL is CAM software that offers an Implant Manager, customized third-party implant geometries and sequences, automatic recognition and interactive placement tools, intelligent machining templates approved specifically for the Datron D5, 4- and 5-axis machining toolpaths and wizards that guide the technician through the machining preparation phase to validate each step. (WorkNC Dental is available through Sescoi, a French company with a U.S. division in Southfield, MI: call 248-351-9300 or visit www.sescoi.com.)
The DATRON D5 Dental Mill was designed with dental-specific applications and a standard 98.5mm puck in mind. Equipped with a fully automated eight-blank material changer and a total of 13 tool positions, the D5 can mill up to 100 consecutive hours unattended. Its rugged construction and precise movements give it the flexibility to manufacture everything from titanium implant bars and custom abutments to zirconia crown and bridge structures, all from a system that fits through a standard doorway and is controlled by an Apple iPad.
