Brian Greer, a waxer at East Tennessee Dental Restorations in Kingsport, TN, is also making a name for himself as a singer/songwriter. He's been performing at Hi-Tec Dental's Annual Rally & Conference for the past three years and, this year, his performance is garnering him industry-wide attention.
Calling it his "ode to lab rats," he wrote The Cover of the LMT, a parody of the song, The Cover of the Rolling Stone (made famous by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show in 1972), and sang it during an evening event at the conference with Tres Hombres, a ZZ Top tribute band, as his backup band. "Although I've sung with Tres Hombres in the past, they had never played the song before and we didn't have a chance to rehearse before I went on stage," says Greer.
Despite winging it, his performance received rave reviews from the 120 laboratory owners and technicians in the audience. "Brian really hit a homerun with writing and performing his song. He brought a unique musical addition to an already unique dental conference that all technicians will enjoy hearing. I still laugh every time I hear the song, and constantly find the words stuck in my head," says Mark Hester, Co-Owner with his wife, Becky, of Hi-Tec Dental. Writing the lyrics came easily to Greer. "LMT is the Holy Grail of the dental laboratory industry. It was a no-brainer as to which magazine to write the song about," he explains.
Growing up, Greer was surrounded by musicians, since band members of Marshall Tucker and Stillwater frequented his father's drag racing shop in his hometown of Warner Robins, GA. "Because of my Dad's business, I grew up listening to music, traveling around and racing cars," says Greer. In fact, before joining our industry three years ago, Greer had a long career as a Funny Car drag racer, taking after his father, Shirl Greer, who was a pioneer in the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Funny Car racing class and its first World Champion in 1974.
