The CAD/CAM software, equipment and materials market continues to flourish and several new players were first-time exhibitors at LAB DAY, including:
Creo Dental System launched the Arum5X Milling Machine. This five-axis wet milling unit is compatible with any scanner and features a nine-unit revolving dispenser, a tool breakage sensor and an online work management website. For details, call 212-302-3860 or visit www.creods.com.
exocad® North America: Founded in Germany in 2010 and in the U.S. in 2011, exocad is quickly becoming a player in the market as 15 "system integration partners" have embraced its exocad DentalCAD software to drive their scanners and mills. Mainly focused on selling to manufacturers and large laboratories, the latest system integrators include Core3d Centres, Apex Dental Milling, Clon3d, and Sagemax Bioceramics.
Designed specifically for dental applications, exocad can be used with virtually any dental scanner, CAM, and fabrication system. "Our system is completely open and most of our customers customize the software to meet their unique strengths and business model," says Tillman Steinbrecher, CEO of exocad GmbH.
The software features modules for crown and bridge, custom implant abutments and bars, as well as a virtual articulator, DICOM viewer, and TruSmile®. Two of the newest features include the bite splint module for designing night-guards and exoCAM simultaneous 5-axis CAM which currently works with the Roland DWX-50 mill. Roland DGA: Japan-based Roland has been selling its DWX-30 and DWX-50 Dental Milling Machines through a network of dealers. Its DWX-50 mills wax, zirconium and PMMA and is capable of five-axis simultaneous machining to achieve complex cuts. It features a five-station automatic tool changer with tool-length sensor, built-in dust collection tray for easy connection to any vacuum system and an innovative clamping system that securely holds a wide variety of materials.
User Mark Jackson, Co-Owner and Vice President of Precision Ceramics Dental Laboratory in Montclair, CA, appreciates the machine for its low maintenance requirements, small footprint and efficient work area. He also praises the spindle collet that's sized to match other industrial milling equipment. "The common spindle collet size means we can cycle our burs through a variety of applications," says Jackson. "It's a nice feature that lets us maximize our efficiency."
Roland's other dental mill, the DWX-30, is a four-axis machine that mills wax and zirconia and features three types of clamps—one for disks and two for blocks—making it easy to securely hold a wide variety of materials.
Both Roland dental mills are open systems that work with scanners such as 3Shape, Dental Wings and I-Metric along with CAM software such as SUM 3D and Dentmill. The 5th axis on the DWX-50 and 4th axis on the DWX-30 are synchronous, allowing the machine to position the material in any axis simultaneously. This is a unique feature for machines in this price range.
The DWX series is available through authorized Roland dealers. For details, call 800-542-2307 or visit www.rolanddga.com.
