. . . to be Jolly, yes, but not because the Christmas holiday is two months away. ’Tis because it’s show season and it’s off to an outstanding start with over 1,000 attendees for the first time ever at LMT LAB DAY East! This, despite the fact that there were three other key industry programs the same weekend (Nobel Biocare and Sirona events in Las Vegas and the National Denturist Association’s 9th Annual Conference in nearby Washington, DC)!
Though we had a good feeling about leaving our former location in New York City for the resort town of Atlantic City, NJ, we couldn’t have anticipated a more wonderful weekend experience. The Convention Center Exhibit Hall was bright and airy and enabled us to provide a comfortable and spacious environment. Attendees drove into the area from all directions and, once there, were greeted with balmy weather and the smell of the ocean; a calming departure from the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan.

A record-breaking crowd welcomed LMT’s LAB DAY East to its new Atlantic City, NJ venue on September 19. More than 1,020 attendees flocked to the Atlantic City Convention Center for a jam-packed day of education, networking and comparison shopping.

Next month begins LMT’s 32nd year serving the information needs of the dental laboratory community and, during these years we’ve established ourselves as the Survey Queens (we’d be the Kings if we were guys but we’re not ☺).

Recently, I was talking to industry veteran George Obst about my startup years and our conversation got me thinking about how the priorities of a small business owner shift as the business matures.
In the beginning, it was all about having enough customers to pay the bills while at the same time making sure our products—the magazine and then LAB DAY—met the needs of the market so we could be sure we’d keep being able to pay those bills. Those were the years of 100-hour workweeks.
Once we established our market presence, we continued to build market share and market value. Four years after starting LMT we introduced Synergy, a magazine for both dental technicians and dentists. We knew it was “an idea ahead of its time” but were eager to push the envelope because we truly believe in the importance of the team effort. If you’re a regular LAB DAY Chicago attendee it may be hard to believe that a show known to be the largest gathering of dental laboratory decision makers in North America began with just 30 exhibitors and about 275 attendees.
Prior to 1985, the Chicago Dental Society (CDS)’s MidWinter Meeting was housed in the downtown Hilton Hotel and a handful of companies hosted programs for the laboratory community across the street in the Blackstone Hotel. But in 1985, the CDS moved its meeting to the convention center, which left some companies up in the air about what to do for their technician customers.
LMT President Judy Fishman—agreeing with some laboratory manufacturers who felt their companies would be dwarfed at the MidWinter—booked space at the Blackstone and offered exhibit tables to laboratory product marketers. LMT's LAB DAY EAST—the largest dental laboratory trade show on the East Coast—was the place to be to research digital technology. This year, of the 93 exhibitors, over 40 companies offered the latest scanners, milling and rapid prototyping machines, wax printers, software, materials and services, allowing attendees to see products up close and personal and comparison shop.
"We're looking to invest in a scanner and milling system—we'll be 'newbies'. Since I own a one-person lab and want to expand, I've been doing a lot of reading and research on new systems but it's key to be able to come to LAB DAY East and see them in person," said David Soto, Accurate Dental, Middletown, NY.

Instead of merely staying the course, laboratory owners are more engaged than ever in finding new ways to, as Steve Jobs coined it: "Think Different." Better yet, you are doing it—which is exactly what needs to happen! I'm freshly back from LAB DAY Chicago thoroughly impressed with the level of reinvention going on. From mergers and acquisitions to enterprising business strategies, both attendees and exhibitors are on their toes, challenged and not defeated.
LAB DAY 2012 could easily have been labeled "The Reinvention Convention."
The implant market is strong and growing, removables continue to be red hot and aging baby boomers promise to keep dentistry hopping. In addition to going digital, you are serving alternate markets, adding removable departments and economy lines while also expanding your high-end departments.
