Zirconia-reinforced materials are a new trend, and expanded options for pre-colored zirconia and ceramics for full contour restorations offer both efficiency and esthetics. Plus, a new type of material: a biocompatible, millable resin on which the final restoration can be built; there's no need for casting or pressing.
Schütz Dental's new millable Tizian Zirconia Reinforced Composite is 80% composite reinforced with zirconium dioxide, combining the advantages of both materials: high stability and excellent esthetics. It can be veneered with composite and indications include up to 14-unit temporary bridges, crowns, veneers, inlays/onlays and frameworks for implant-supported restorations. "The material is very antagonist friendly and can be milled with Schütz's Tizian line of machines and any mill that accepts 98-mm blocks," said John Schaible, President of Schütz Dental Group in the U.S.
Dentsply previewed a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic material called Celtra. Zirconia is atomically dissolved into the lithium silicate glass matrix to increase flexural strength while still allowing for translucency and opalescence. It will be available in the third quarter of this year in millable blocks for the Sirona inLab MC XL and in a pressable format during the first quarter of 2014.
VITA also showcased a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLS)—VITA Suprinity—that will be available later this year. The new-generation glass ceramic has a zirconium dioxide content around 10 times that of traditional CAD/CAM glass ceramic in combination with a fine-grained and homogeneous structure. Indicated for anterior and posterior crowns, implant restorations as well as veneers, inlays and onlays, the material is available for the CEREC/inLab MC XL system. Also in the works: Suprinity for the Amann Girrbach Ceramill Motion 2.

The VITA In-Ceram® YZ DISC is available in three pre-colored, monochromatic shades—light, medium and intense—that eliminate the need for manual coloring although VITA In-Ceram Coloring Liquid can be used to achieve subtler shade variations if desired.
With the addition of five new classical shades of VITA VM LC indirect composite—B4, C1, C4, D2 and D4—the material is now available in all VITA classical A1-D4 shades, with the exception of B1.
There was a lot of buzz about Kuraray Noritake Dental's new multi-layered zirconia. Each KATANA Zirconia ML disc features four layers of color—35% enamel, 15% gradational, another 15% gradational and 35% dentin—resulting in full contour restorations that have the look of layered porcelain. The zirconia is highly translucent yet strong and the discs are available in three shades: A Light, A Dark and B Light. KATANA Zirconia ML will be available in the U.S. this summer, pending FDA approval.
Ivoclar Vivadent announced new IPS e.max CAD materials and indications to be launched soon:
IPS e.max CAD B32 size block will come in a variety of low translucency shades and used for up to three-unit anterior bridges, premolar forward.
While IPS e.max Press Abutments have already been launched in the U.S., the company previewed its CAD version: hybrid abutments and hybrid abutment crowns that are individually milled from lithium disilicate blocks and bonded with a titanium base.
CAD/CAM-fabricated IPS e.max veneering structures for zirconium oxide frameworks can now be made for wide-span bridges in addition to crowns and short-span bridges. The new IPS e.max ZirCAD Colour Blocks in MO3 and MO4 shades complement the shade range of the overstructure.
Also for the IPS e.max product line, Ivoclar Vivadent released new firing parameters and a redesigned, streamlined firing tray that reduce complete crystallization firing times to less than 15 minutes and the next generation of the Multilink Automix System for the adhesive cementation technique. The formula of the luting composite has been enhanced to allow excess material to be even more easily removed and the system now includes a white shade, try-in paste and Air Block Liquid Strip.
Amann Girrbach is expanding its Ceramill Zolid system for monolithic restorations with the Ceramill Zolid pre-shaded blanks available in four shades. Six new shades (purple, red, gingiva, brown, eggshell white and bleach) of Ceramill stains and glazes are also being added, and the Ceramill Liquid assortment for the dipping and brush technique will include 16 VITA Classic shades and liquid stains for the gingival region.
Also coming soon from Amann Girrbach are VITA Enamic® blocks for the Ceramill Motion 2 and—in the works—VITA ZLS® blocks for the Ceramill Motion 2. All of the new materials and liquids will be available later this year.
Coming by the end of the year from BEGO USA: BeCe® CAD Zirkon HT+, a high-grade, translucent zirconium dioxide for full anatomical crowns and bridges; seven shades will be available. The company will also be augmenting its CAD/CAM product line with the introduction of telescopic crowns, SLM posts and cores, attachments for implants and bar-supported prostheses.
One of the best reasons to attend the IDS is to get a look at European innovations that haven't yet made it to the U.S. One that was frequently mentioned on the show floor was poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK), a millable plastic that's been used for more than a decade for implantable medical device applications. Suitable for patients with metal allergies, the biocompatible material has an elastic modulus similar to that of bone, is X-ray transparent and can be built on with acrylic. The material is being used in Europe for a variety of applications, including full and partial dentures, implant frameworks and overdentures.
At the IDS, the United Kingdom-based Juvora™ showcased its Juvora Dental Disc for milling removable denture frameworks and implant-supported superstructures. The Juvora Dental Disc is made from PEEK-OPTIMA® by Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions, a global leader of PEEK-based biomaterials. Already established in Europe with a CE mark, Juvora is currently seeking FDA clearance to market the Dental Disc in the U.S.
Two implant manufacturers were also showing systems using the material: Belgium's SisoMM has been selling a PEEK-based implant system in Europe for two years and currently has about 12,000 implants placed. At the end of the year, Phoenix Implants is introducing a new one-piece implant in Europe that combines a titanium screw with a PEEK abutment. Another exhibitor, FDZ Milling Center, displayed a variety of restorations made with PEEK, such as provisional restorations and partial and implant frameworks, including frameworks made from PEEK impregnated with carbon fibers for added strength.
