“We’re in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution: it’s all about interoperability of devices and connectivity between dentists and labs. The end result is better patient care.” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Henry Schein, kicking off the company’s Evolution of Digital Dentistry Summit 2016 at the Museum of Science and Industry, held during the Chicago Midwinter Meeting in February.
After a reception during which attendees could network and visit the nearby exhibits in the museum, there was a panel discussion on digital dentistry moderated by Rich Miranda, President, Global Prosthetic Solutions and Laboratory Group, Henry Schein.
“What’s the one problem we’re all trying to solve? Inconsistency,” said Panelist Richard Harrell, CDT, Chief Development and Operations Officer of DSG. “Digital technology eliminates the human touch points and thus the primary point of introduction of variable to the manufacturing...
Zahn Dental’s LMT LAB DAY Ballroom was bustling with attendees eager to see the company’s new line of open CAD/CAM equipment, Novux®, for printing, scanning and milling. The printing line includes the NX 3 Print and NX 4 Print printers and the NX 3D Print Box for post-curing. For scanning and milling, options include the NX100 scanner, NX Mill4 four-axis dry mill, NX Mill5 five-axis wet/dry mill and NXS-Plus and NX M-Therm sintering furnaces. The mills are designed for a wide variety of materials, including Zirlux®, Zirlux Acetal, BruxZir®, KATANA, wax, titanium and non-precious metals. Distributed in Belgium by Arseus Lab, the system is now available in the U.S. through Zahn Dental.
The company also expanded its comprehensive Zirlux line with Zirlux 16+. These pre-shaded zirconia discs and blocks correlate with the 16 classical VITA shades as well as white and bleach shades. Demonstrating greater than 44% translucency and a flexural strength of 1,200MPa, Zirlux...
The LMT staff is still on a high from LMT® LAB DAY® Chicago at the end of February. We had record-breaking attendance—4,163 people, up from 3,501 last year! Attendees came from 49 states plus Washington, D.C. and 58 different countries—that’s 15 more than in 2015—making it a decidedly international affair.
The mood was upbeat among exhibitors and attendees alike. With the bigger exhibit hall and clinic rooms and open lobby (and Big Bar!), there’s much more elbow room at the Hyatt. It’s conducive to meeting old friends, having meaningful conversations and learning about new technology.
LMT Editors were around the town to find out what’s on the minds of laboratory owners, managers and technicians. Many of the trends we’ve spotted over the last couple of years continue to play out; here’s an overview:
3D printing. As the technology evolves, printers are getting more affordable and material options and applications are expanding....

LAB DAY attendees got their first look at Glidewell Laboratories’ CloudPoint, a line of equipment, software and services that offers an economical means of transitioning to the CAD/CAM production of full contour restorations. The entire digital workflow is cloud-based, so it doesn’t require in-house IT support, server space or other technological resources typically required to go digital. Labs only need an internet connection to get started.
The CloudPoint System includes:
CloudPoint FastScan™, a high-resolution, high-speed scanner that simultaneously scans the solid model, and opposing model and die on an open-air scanning platform that accommodates large articulators. After scanning, cases are automatically uploaded to the cloud, where they can be designed by the lab or forwarded to an experienced CAD/CAM specialist at the Glidewell Outsource Milling Center.
For labs that choose to design restorations in house, the CloudPoint FastDesign™ software includes a complete...

DENTAL TEAM: Sven Jesse, Jesse & Frichtel Dental Labs and Dr. Edward Narcisi, DMD, both of Pittsburgh, PA
RESTORATIVE PROBLEM: The patient—the wife of one of the laboratory owners--had an existing all-ceramic restoration on tooth #30 that cracked (she had previously had a PFM crown that also chipped).
TREATMENT PLAN: Since functionality and esthetics were a priority, a Zirlux FC2 full contour zirconia crown was chosen. The laboratory prefers to use Zirlux FC2 because of its flexural strength and low wear against opposing dentition. The Zirlux FC2 system consists of five pre-shaded zirconia discs, 10 stains, six modifier pastes and a universal glaze. The pre-shaded discs allow you to produce all 16 VITA A-D shades as well as bleach shades with no dipping.
FABRICATION PROCESS: A custom shade was taken in the laboratory and Jesse completed a shade-mapping diagram, indicating the varying shades and characteristics in the occlusal, incisal, body and neck areas of the tooth. The...
