Digital Dentistry: Material Properties, Selection and Use

Digital dentistry, in particular CAD/CAM systems, continues to grow in use for fabricating a wide variety of dental restorations. Although the machining system is the primary facilitator in this scheme, the milled materials themselves ultimately determine the long-term success or failure of the system. Dr. Russell Giordano, DMD, DMSc, FADM, reviews current block materials for full contour and frameworks. He discusses how to handle zirconia, which has become the primary all-ceramic framework material, properties of a variety of zirconia blocks and veneer materials.

"Scientific Solutions" Workshops (These one-hour courses are held simultaneously and repeated every hour.)

The Dynamic Function of Denture Fabrication: One definition of “dynamic” is active and changing; characterized by vigorous activity and producing or undergoing change and development. Alice Sager, CDT, and Dennis Urban, CDT, discuss how movement of the mandible and all its dynamics play an essential function in accurately restoring the mastication process for patients with implant-retained prosthetics or conventional removable prosthetics.

The Art of Esthetics and the Science of Compatibility: In this Korean language demonstration, Jung Chun Park explains advanced porcelain techniques using Vita's metal ceramic VITAVM®13. He emphasizes the easy creation of natural-looking restorations, individual characterization, matching color and translucency, individualizing tooth form and finishing techniques.

An Esthetic Approach to Layering Zirconia Oxide Substructures: Bob Williams, CDT, demonstrates how to create restorations that combine the strength of zirconia with the esthetic properties and accurate shade matching of VITAVM®9 porcelain. He discusses the use of effect powders, layering for natural appearance, translucency, surface texturing and contouring.

Excellent Esthetics with Porcelain Veneers Using a Foil Technique: Fausto Catena, CDT, demonstrates a simplified and effective method of fabricating laminate veneers using a modern foil technique. Explore the natural-looking beauty of VITAVM®13 porcelain combined with a cost-effective method of creating laminate veneers that reflect high-end value and enable the ceramist to achieve consistent shade matches with internal characterization, shaping and texturing.

High Strength and Extraordinary Beauty with CAD/CAM: The Sirona Inlab and VITA Substructures Made Easy: Join Jim McGuire, CDT, to learn how to create fast and economical CAD/CAM frameworks and restorations using the Sirona MC XL milling system to mill a variety of materials, including CAD-Waxx, a wax substitute; Vita YZ, a zirconia oxide material that provides both strength and translucency; and VITABLOCKS Mark II and TriLuxe forte, feldspar ceramics for veneers, inlays, onlays and full-contour restorations that can be marketed as a premium same-day service product.

Pressing & Layering: A Functional Approach to All Ceramics: Pressed porcelains have made their mark over the years as a viable esthetic restoration that offers clinical longevity, dense margins and a natural appearance. Newer systems offer materials that can be pressed to substructures. Join Bill Mrazek, BS, CDT, as he discusses material properties, advantages and step-by-step techniques of VITAPM®9 and the new low-fusing VITAVM®9, a new technology combination of press-to-milled zirconia.

VMK Porcelain's 3rd Generation - Master the Art: Felix Pages, CDT, demonstrates the buildup process on restorations using VITA's new third-generation VMK porcelain, which features super fine particle size, comfortable handling and natural esthetics. Modifiers of VMK porcelains are reintroduced to modify the general shade and create natural anomalies that appear in dentition. Pages also discusses the place of VITA VMK porcelains in today's ceramics.

Teaching Shade-Taking Techniques to Your Clients

You can have a precise marginal fit, perfect occlusion and a reliable, biocompatible material that wears better than natural enamel, but if the shade is off, even just a little, the patient will notice, and a remake will be in the works. Although most of us have a strong understanding of VITA 3D-Master Shades—including value, chroma, hue and the advantages they provide clinically and in differentiating laboratories—the challenge is getting dentists and their teams to use this superior, evidence-based approach to taking shades. Join Dr. Mark Murphy to learn how to create a lunch-and-learn for dentists and their teams that helps them understand and use the 3D-Master shade language so their shades become more predictable and their color language more scientific. Attendees receive a DVD of the lecture.
