It was LMT’s biggest LAB DAY yet. Just over 3,500 attendees came to the industry’s busiest, most exciting event of the year to learn at 367 educational courses, shop an energy-packed exhibit hall with 241 companies, and network and catch up with their peers.
The show’s new home, the Hyatt Regency Chicago, won rave reviews from the crowd. The hotel offered more room for education and a spacious new exhibit hall that featured wider walking aisles, an attendee café and a green park-like area that featured benches where attendees could meet and recharge—literally, at...

A female patient, approximately 65 years old, presented with tooth #10 fractured down to the root; it was extracted and an implant was seated. She had had a gold filling on tooth #9 for nearly 45 years, and couldn’t imagine her appearance without it.
Although the gap following implantation was not provisionally restored, the gingival situation was excellent (see Figure 1). During the intraoral try-in, the crown showed good results in the cervical gingiva as well as good fit and shade match.

An approximately 50-year old patient presented with a fracture on tooth #9 (see Figure 1). Since the root was also fractured, the tooth was extracted and a clasp-retained provisional restoration was seated (see Figure 2).
The gingival papilla was prepared prior to placing the implant in order to ensure subsequent seamless progress of the case. After placing the implant, sufficient time was left for the gingiva to regenerate, which was in perfect condition after healing (see Figure 3).
The challenging aspect of this case was to match the transparency of tooth...January 13 at 11:06 am in How to Use VITA VM 13 for Challenging Anterior Metal-Ceramic Restorations

A patient who was approximately 45 years old presented with a devitalized tooth #10 with dark discolorations (see Figure 1). This was a classic case for a metal-ceramic restoration because the discolored tooth stump would show through an all-ceramic restoration and make the crown look grey.
With this VM 13 crown, the goal was to reproduce numerous small enamel cracks, mamelons and decalcification marks like those of the adjacent tooth #9 (see Figure 2). After the first firing, Interno 1 (white smoke) was inlaid for the small enamel cracks; Interno 2 (sand) was used to emphasize...January 13 at 10:56 am in How to Use VITA VM 13 for Challenging Anterior Metal-Ceramic Restorations

Over the last 30 years or so, the use of alternative/complementary medical therapies has become more widespread in the U.S. Now allopathic (traditional) practices are taking a more holistic approach to healthcare and the trend is continuing to generate more avenues of opportunity.
In addition, as we learn ever more about how the human body works, it’s become clearer to the traditional medical profession that many important clues to one’s health can be gotten from the oral cavity and, thus, it is of increasing importance for physicians and dentists to work together for the well-being...
The bucolic town of Central City, Pennsylvania lies five miles down the road from the site of the Flight 93 memorial and not far from the Quecreek coalmine that trapped nine men underground for four days in 2002. It’s also home to Curt Morgese, owner of a one-person, high-end C&B dental laboratory. As of last November, he’s also the district’s borough councilman.
“Making teeth has been a life-long passion,” he says. “I am always on a quest for knowledge in my daily profession.” He is also keen on politics.
He relocated his lab to Central City from Greenburg,...

“Change, consolidation and new business models are inevitable, but survival, growth and a seat at the table are optional. Your future in the next several years is dependent on what you decide to do,” said Mark Murphy, DDS, in his State of the Industry presentation at the 88th Annual Cal-Lab Meeting. “We have tremendous control over what our role will be in the future. You can’t change the direction of the wind, but you sure can set your sails.”
Other speakers during this year’s meeting offered ideas on exactly how to set those sails. Terry Fine, President of...

KDF introduced two new products at the show:
Cascom SE Casting Machine offers high-frequency alloy induction heating and vacuum and pressure casting. It doesn’t use flame during the melting process so the alloy doesn’t absorb gas, minimizing porosity and creating a smooth surface. The unit is user-friendly, simple to operate and offers a fast casting for various types of alloys.
Zircom Sintering Furnace features a molybdenum disilicide heater that provides clean, reliable and consistent results. Compact and user friendly, the unit works with a variety of zirconia materials and features...
Harvest Dental introduced a new polychromatic cross-linked acrylate polymer for producing natural-looking, long-term provisional restorations in the anterior region. Composed of a nano-hybrid composite structure, ZCAD Temp Esthetic is a multi-layered machinable block that harmoniously distributes light, opalescence and fluorescence. For details on the material, call 714-674-7400 or visit www.harvestdental.com.
Custom Automated Prosthetics (CAP) introduced Multi FZ, a multi-layered zirconia that makes it possible to achieve an esthetic, multi-colored, monolithic, high-strength (1,100MPa flexural strength), milled full contour zirconia restoration without dipping or green-state shading. The 98-mm discs mimic natural dentition with cervical, body and enamel shading and a “blend zone” at each shade interface. For four- or five-axis milling machines, the discs are competitively priced and come in three different colors and white in order to match 16 VITA shades and bleach shades. CAP Multi...
