No matter what we do, we must always remember the patients. If we can make them happy, good things trickle our way. Figuring out how to help the dentist help the patient is a task worth pursuing. Because if we position dental restoratives as commodities, the cheapest crowns will always win.

What is a better solution for future lab success? Invest capital in people or invest capital in new technology? I'd like to hear everyones thoughts on this.

It has to do with your area. Here where we are, we have a lack of trained technicians, so it's almost always the right choice to invest in upgrading the technicians in our lab.
In your area it might be that you have high turnover and therefore need to remain competitive with other labs offering other products.
Do you train in-house or do you pick up trained techs when needed? -
Jim Thacker · Vice President
Both. Priorities depend on the availability of skilled technicians available in your area, the dentist market you want to sell to, and whether technology can deliver the results your customers expect. The answer depends on several variables.

a ton of factors to be considered but my gut tells me, a good healthy balance of both.

Still learning, still perfecting.
I founded OcclusalWorks Dental Lab in 2002 and was the very first Dental Lab to offer CAD/CAM via CEREC before it was even 3D. I knew in those days that computer aided dentistry was in it's infant stage. We have come so far, but not far enough.
During my time in the dental industry, I have consulted with oral surgeons, prosthedontists and general dentists. I have spoken with not a few patients, listened to their concerns, and have seen all types of cases.
Do you know what I found? EVERY case is important. We cannot afford to let seemingly mundane cases be sent out with sub-par results. We cannot let complex cases fail because our new technology can't perform the desired customization these cases require.
It is my mission to help unravel the mysteries of using new computerized technologies in a seemless way. All technology have strengths and all have weak spots we must learn to minimize. Join me to learn how to shorten the technology learning curve. Together we can get some real answers.
