Trick or Treat for Children’s Dental Health
Just in time for Halloween, the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation—also known as America’s Toothfairy—is making it easy for families, laboratories and dentists to collect donations for children’s oral health programs. Its Trick or Treat for America’s Toothfairy campaign features free Trick or Treat donation boxes (available from Patterson Dental Supply), flyers and labels (downloadable at www.AmericasToothfairy.org). The boxes can be placed in dental offices, laboratories or carried while trick or treating. One hundred percent of the donations go to children’s oral health programs.
All donations are tax deductible and should be sent with a submittal form (downloadable at www.AmericasToothFairy.org) to: Trick or Treat for America’s Toothfairy National Children’s Oral Health Foundation, 4108 Park Road, Suite 406, Charlotte, NC 28209; credit card donations can also be made at the website.
NCHOF’s mission is to eliminate pediatric oral disease and promote overall health and well being for millions of children from vulnerable populations. Since its inception in 2006, the NCHOF network of affiliates—including non-profit dental centers, dental schools, community clinics and volunteer dental professionals—has provided oral health services to over one million children. The Foundation offers a variety of programs including Tomorrow’s Smiles®, which provides free care and education to at-risk teens; Oral Health Zone Program™, which helps community leaders address local oral health crisis; and The America’s Toothfairy Dental Home Program™, which provides pro bono dental services to underserved youth.

Britain: After Auction, a New Owner for Churchill’s Wartime Dentures
A specialist at one of Britain’s leading medical museums called them “the teeth that saved the world,” and a private British investor who bought a set of Winston Churchill’s wartime dentures at auction on Thursday appeared to agree. The anonymous buyer paid the equivalent of $23,750, more than three times the pre-sale estimate, after bidding at an auction house in Aylsham that recently sold one of Churchill’s half-smoked cigars for the equivalent of $6,130. The dentures were sold by the family of Derek Cudlipp, the dental technician commissioned by Churchill to make them, and had been kept for years in a drawer in the Cudlipp family home. Mr. Cudlipp’s son Nigel told the BBC that his father had told him that Churchill would flick the dentures out and “throw them across the room” when he was angered by setbacks to the Allied cause, and that the prime minister tore up Mr. Cudlipp’s enlistment papers at Downing Street, telling him “he would be more important to the war effort if he stayed in London to repair his dentures.”

NADL Announces Intertek is authorized to Conduct DAMAS Certification for Dental Laboratories in North America
The National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) has approved Intertek as an NADL-authorized third-party certification body for dental laboratories.
Intertek is a globally-recognized management systems registrar, offering auditing and certification services to a broad portfolio of standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971. The NADL has brought Intertek on board to offer third-party certification to the Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audit System (DAMAS) to dental laboratories in North America.
DAMAS is a voluntary, third-party auditing specification for dental laboratories. Based upon the ISO 9001 standard, DAMAS is designed to specifically address quality management principles in the dental laboratory setting. The requirements introduced by DAMAS closely mirror the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Quality System/Good Manufacturing Practice (FDA QS/GMP) specifications, which any dental laboratory conducting business in the United States must meet.
Intertek was part of the industry partnership that developed and launched the DAMAS specification in the United Kingdom in 1998.
“We are pleased to have Intertek as an option for dental laboratories to choose from for third-party certification. Their global reach and experience make the company an excellent resource for laboratories that are seeking to adhere to the highest quality systems standards,” says Bennett Napier, CAE, co-executive director of NADL.
“Intertek is excited to partner with NADL on DAMAS in the North American market,” says Calin Moldovean, president of Intertek’s Systems Certification group. “Third-party auditing and certification gives dental laboratories the assurance that they are going above and beyond industry requirements to proactively incorporate best practices in quality management.”
