The industry is abuzz with questions and concerns about the FDA’s newest statement on in-lab milling of implant abutments (see NADL alert below). Watch for additional coverage in LMT.
From NADL:FDA Alert - Labs not permitted to use CAD/CAM for in-lab milling of most abutments
When FDA began studying the use of CAD/CAM in dental laboratory technology, the FDA’s initial focus was on angulation and the implant/abutment interface. FDA ultimately made clear statements that anyone making the implant/abutment interface is a "manufacturer" as such must obtain 510(k) clearance to do so.
That still did not answer the questions about the “tooth end” of the abutment, the abutment collar/post. Sometime later FDA ultimately stated a dental laboratory may mill the collar/post as long as the dental laboratory follows the manufacturer's FDA cleared instructions.
Now, nearly two years later, there is still only one manufacturer that has obtained FDA clearance for their in-lab CAD/CAM...
The National Association of Dental Laboratories is pleased to announce the launch of two new social media outlets that will serve as the foundation of NADL's ongoing public awareness campaign to address core policy objectives that promote "transparency in dentistry" and the role and value of a competently trained dental technician.
"During the last year and half, NADL has conducted a series of focus group meetings, conducted national surveys with the dental laboratory industry to gather ideas and input for the messaging for this campaign, the core of this objective has now come to fruition, there is much work to do going forward to ensure that the message is heard" says Henry Martin, CDT, NADL President.
The new social media outlets are www.whatsinmymouth.us and https://www.youtube.com/user/WIYMCampaign/videos
The information gathered on these sites provides comprehensive information for the dental consumer, dentists and the dental laboratory community. The campaign to promote these...
In December, the IRS released its final rule on the Medical Device Excise Tax (MDT), determining that only those devices required to be listed with the FDA are subject to the tax (for example, sleep apnea and snoring devices as well as all restorations fabricated outside of the U.S.). To provide labs with a clear understanding of the MDT, the NADL has prepared a Medical Device Excise Tax Guidebook which includes an overview of the tax; the definition of a taxable medical device; key factors for manufacturer and importer determination; and a computation of the tax due to the IRS. The guidebook also covers sale and sale price; tax-free sales for export and further manufacture; and the final IRS rule along with IRS Notice 2012-77 and the interim rules. Electronic manuals (on CD) are available to NADL members for $50 each and to non-members for $250; printed copies are $75 for members and $300 for non-members. To order the guidebook, visit www.nadl.org.
During the Vision 21 meeting in Las Vegas in January, the NADL welcomed its new president, Gary Iocco, President of Dimension Dental Design in Hastings, MN, and honored several other industry members:
