Sorry, this Droid ! Tells me his ten year old son designs crowns on the system. This makes me wonder if my years of experience matter. There sure are plenty of jobs for denture techs out there and few C&B. I would like to stay in this line of work for many more years to come. Just not sure what direction to take.

Hello! I am looking for some advice. I have been working in C&B for 32 years, so I've seen many changing techniques. I am in a small lab and we outsource our zirconia substructures. The lab has no plan to digital. I would like to advance and gain experience in scanning and design with CAD/CAM systems....See more

Kimberly, probably the best way is to just sit in on as many programs as you can attend, and read all the journals. You might also want to join forums like the Facebook Cerec InLab forum, the Dental Lab Network and the IDF. You can pick up a lot there as well. Finally, I'd like to extend an invitation to visit me any time. We have 8 milling machines here, a ton of different design software and a cone...See more

Hi Mark.
Montclair CA isn't all that far away from my one person lab situation in El Cajon CA. Is there a way for anyone to "apprentice" with you?
I have been exposed to the original Cerec inLab system for more then 5 years now and have one that I uses regularly here.I use it as an extra technician and helping hand.I am still on the CDT files and the original scanner. It allows me to give...See more -

HI Kimberly
As one who has worked with zirconia fabrication before, my suggestions is to outsource that product to somewhere else. It's very labor intensive for a small lab. The product is milled between 24 to 27% larger in the "green" state, you carefully have to "clean things up" and smooth things, sometimes pre colored having a stain soak into it, then it has to be sintered over night or at...See more -

Hi Kimberly... You can gain experience in CAD/CAM places from a lot of companies, Vident being one of them offering training on the Cerec In-Lab system which is one the most versatile system for small labs and it would give you the opportunity to interact with your Cerec doctors. At the same time I would ask you, how many Zr based restorations do you think you'll be producing? or a simpler questions...See more

Hi Kimberly I would suggest to look into Zircon Zahn system they have a scanner that does not require a lot of training and it's designed by a very good dental technicians mind set ,Enrico Steiger.I'm curently working with this scanner.Cerec is way too costly to buy, lease and mantain.

I just posted our Sirona inLab for sale Kimberly. We need to upgrade to a mill that will handle the growing amount of units we do now. For a small lab the inlab (cerec) can handle your workflow. Let me know if your interested, ours will save you you $80,000 over a new system.

Kim,
Best Advice: Take your time! With as many options as there are, there is a perfect one for each lab given its niche, which needs to be decided on your terms, your current as well as future business models. For some labs, open architecture scanners are best with oursourcing to milling facilities. For others, its in-house; Dongels v Unlimited, Materials they can mill, necessary mechanical...See more -

Kim,
You got a great advise from Matt. When you are ready to make the decision, keep in mind that whichever investment you decide to make, it needs to generate enough profit to pay back the initial investment within the first 12 month. Best of luck. -

Sjaan, I'm sorry I haven't kept up with this topic. You and Kimberly, and anyone else who would like to come spend a day doing digital dentistry is welcome to come here as I mentioned above. many of the things you mentioned as undesirable about zirconia milling are actually the things i find MOST desirable! I can use apprentice technicians or unskilled labor to do menial tasks while freeing up my CDT's...See more

Well, maybe I'm behind the curve, but I don't really see where mobile apps are going to affect the way we do business other than as a remote access to the software on the laboratory desktop, ie, designs, customer data and scheduling information. We will always be manufacturers and the action takes place where the production is. If you wanted to work from home and take scanned data and do case designs...See more

You are so right Mark. I even hate to check my office messages when I am out of town! and when I am out of town, I would rather not think of the cases that are due when I get back from my trip...haha
