Hey does anyone know about using a CT Scan for impressions? Ever thought of it...?
-
Carlos Robayo, CDT · CARES Specialist Greater Los Angeles
Interesting topic... It would be great if a company can translate CT scan images into STL files that can be use to mill parts (substrates, full crowns)... One problem they might face is when full metal crowns, metal posts, amalgams, etc are next to a prep, to my understanding these create "noise" on the CT scan...

We have a cone bean CT scanner here, and yes, it's possible to export the data as STL files. We do it all the time. We also use STL data from both intra oral scans as well as images from scanned models from the 3Shape scanner and use superimposition software to import them STL data backwards into, and combine with, the DICOM data.
However, if I understyand your question, it is whether...See more -

Carlos, I didn't answer your specific question about radiographic scatter. Metalic artifacts scatter the electrons and create starburst patterns of noise. There are SOME software algorithms designed to reduce this phenomena, but any metal in the mouth is going to play havoc, and the images frequently need to be cropped by hand.

Love the technological trend and am sad that this wave may need to pass me by. Saw a programrecently including "dither" besides "algorithms" to duplicate image onto material for design.....but why not have the dentist use that "intra-oral spray" to cover anything metallic? Ivoclar and Patterson probably sell that stuff, if not your favorite vendor?Wouldn't you say?
There is always more...See more -

Hey all! If I'm in the market for purchasing a scanner, what is the best way to go about contacting the company? (i.e.. a sales rep, do you recommend going to an even like LAB Day to review the products, or will the company even come out to the job on site)?? ~would love suggestions if any of you...See more

All of the above. We generally will use trade shows to comparison shop competing equipment and engage the reps in discussions about how their products fit into our business model. When we are ready to take it to the next level, we generally ask for a referral of a current customer that we can go visit, receive an objective viewpoint and see the product in a real-world environment. We will have an in-lab...See more

I talked with milling centers I subcontracted with . Since they used different scanners , I felt they would have a strong opinion what they liked and disliked about the ones they are familiar with.

If you can wait until the fall, you might find it helpful to attend the CAD/CAM Symposium hosted by the Dental Laboratory Owners Association of California (DLOAC) in mid-November. See LMT's Calendar for details.

Oh and DO go to the symposium at the Langham in South Pasadena. Stay at the hotel and take everything in. You won't be disappointed.

HI, have another question for any of you that know the answer! I'm looking in to a 3D digital scanning machine like a 3Shape or possibly an iTero. But, I am wondering about the time difference and cost incurred for each step. Are there many steps? And, does the manufacturer incur the price of hardware,...See more

Hello! What I would like to know and have been thinking about for some time now is...do many of you use an advanced technology like 3D imaging for a scan of a mold? If you do, what companies out there seem to manufacture the best? Recommendations??? Thanks:)

I'm currently using Sirona's inEos scanner, in my opinion along with the milling unit inLab MC XL and their Biogeneric software, it is the most complete system on the market. E4D also has a pretty good system however they are a few steps behind Sirona.

Carla Miller · CAD/CAM Technician
We use a 3Shape scanner and I love it! We also use the inLab MC XL milling unit. We transfer files from the 3Shape scans into the inLab software for the units we mill in-house, and use the 3Shape software for the designs we need to outsource. It all flows pretty well.

What do you mean by Apps? Are you talking about business management software, design software, CAD CAM software?

Hmm...Give me about a month to see if I can crank one out for you.

Mark, it could be anything really. A mobile application, also known as mobile app, is a term used to describe software that runs on smartphones and mobile phones. Mobile applications are designed to educate, entertain, or assist consumers in their daily lives.

I got that part Jose. I was just wondering of she was looking for something more specific. Is she hoping to track cases, do CRM or check 3D CAD designs while on the road?
